Martha Graham Dance Company 85 Anniversary Season Opening Night Gala Honoring Robert Wilson.
The night was amazing with a breathtaking performance of the most talented dancers of the Dance Company doing their magic on the stage. Their movement dazzled the audience and the applause were as loud as they come.
Beginning piece was performed all in white and with the minimalistic use of costumes and props, which made my eyes focused on the lines of the dancers rather than everything else. A bare stage filled with dancers transformed info a symphony of incredible flowing ensemble. The mood of the visual was moving, delicate and serene.
Next it was the tribal sounds of music surrounding the theater and the dancers dressed in a black two piece outfit came out to share their dance with us. Their powerful yet controlled movements kept on going and background was changing as well with each different sound slowly reeling the audience into their world.
Another piece had no music, but the stage had some dressing on it that included 3 various sized rocks and 3 dancers then populated the area to create a very dramatic atmosphere. Choreographed fighting scenes followed and the red scarf like fabric came out as then the music began to play a very natural sound of simulated rain and thunder. It was a bit of a nature scene with a flower and wolves howling and running gracefully around the stage in a very abstract yet creative and captivating manner.
An ensemble piece of at least 12 dancers performed a piece to a fast paced and playful staccato moving music. Both sexes were dressed in identical long black outfits which created a unique look as a whole. It was a bit too much, as if chaos was happening on stage in front of our eyes, but in a choreographer controlled way. Linear ending concluded the piece and overall it was very pleasant to watch.
Followed was a beautiful lady in "RED" looking very picturesque and expressing lots of emotions with each of her movements. Red symbolizes many things and one of them obviously being love and also anger and pain which love or the heartbreak causes which is evident as the woman rips pages out of the notebook as due to great pain. Then she speak as she lays on the bench and the sound of shattered glass is heard in the distance as a result she picks up a glass and drinks then covers herself with a piece of fabric and the curtain goes down. Beautiful breathtaking performance, could not keep my eyes off of her.
The closing sequences of the performance featured guest appearances by New York Socials Muffie Potter Aston, Cornelia Guest, Grace Hightower DeNiro, and Somers Farkas.
Soon the night of the beautiful and graceful dances and dancers would be concluded, however not completely it was followed by a wonderful dinner and live music and of course the honoring of Robert Wilson.
