Hit the Hall began previews at the Barrow Street Theatre on Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Hit the Hall began previews at the Barrow Street Theatre on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, with an official opening night on Sunday, March 10, 2013

It’s the early hours of June 28, 1969 when a routine police raid on The Stonewall Inn, a popular underground gay bar in Greenwich Village, sparks a full-scale riot.  Violent protests and street demonstrations continued for the next several days in what became known as The Stonewall Riots, thrusting a group of unlikely revolutionaries onto the frontlines of history and igniting one of the most influential social and political movements of the 20th Century. Hit the Wall focuses on that wild and enigmatic first night of the riots, placing the audience just on the periphery of the conflict.   With an imaginative and theatrical blend of history and mythology, Hit the Wall shines a contemporary light on the legacy of Stonewall.

The ensemble of Hit the Wall includes Nick Bailey, Jessica Dickey, Ben Diskant, Nathan Lee Graham, Matthew GreerGregory HaneySean Allan Krill, Rania Salem Manganaro, Jonathan Mastro, Ray Rizzo, Carolyn Michelle Smith, Arturo Soria and Indigo Street.  Ms. Manganaro and Mr. Soria reprise their roles from the critically acclaimed World Premiere of Hit the Wall, developed and produced in 2012 by The Inconvenience as part of Steppenwolf’s Garage Rep. series in Chicago.

The creative team also includes Lauren Helpern (Set), David Hyman (Costumes), Keith Parham (Lighting), Daniel Kluger and Brandon Wolcott (Sound), J. David Brimmer (Fight Director), and Pat McCorkle (Casting).  The Production Stage Manager is David M. Beris.

Hit the Wall is presented Off-Broadway by Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian, Tom Wirtshafter, Patrick Daly, Burnt Umber, Roger E. Kass, Starry Night Entertainment, BarLor Productions, Christian Chadd Taylor, Marc and Lisa Biales.

Hit the Wall is performed at the Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street, at 7th Avenue South), just steps away from the Stonewall Inn.

Here’s what the 26-year-old Girls Actress/Writer says about not wanting to have a body of a Victoria Secret Model and other issues

Here’s what the 26-year-old "Girls" Actress/Writer Lena Dunham says about not wanting to have a body of a Victoria Secret Model

On not wanting a Victoria’s Secretbody: “I don’t think I’d like it very much. There would be all kinds of weird challenges to deal with that I don’t have to deal with now. I don’t want to go through life wondering if people are talking to me because I have a big rack. Not being the babest person in the world creates a nice barrier. That said, I probably would want to see if I could get free food at restaurants. Then I’d call a doctor and see if she could return me to my former situation.”

On if Girls is a show based on feminism: “How could a show about women exploring women not be? Feminism isn’t a dirty word. It’s not like we’re a deranged group who think women should take over the planet, raise our young on our own and eliminate men from the picture. Feminism is about women having all the rights that men have.”

On guys she’s attracted to: “When I was younger I liked men who gave me some guff. Now I’m much more into someone who is interesting and open with his emotions, has a really good sense of humor and a passion for what he does, wants to hang out with my parents and doesn’t want to stay out too late. If I can get excited imagining funny things he did as a kid, there’s a pretty good chance I’m in love with him.”

Girls has been Renewed for Season 3.

New Yorkers Raise a Glass to Toast Mirza Ghalib, French Wine Especially Blended to Complement Indian Cuisine

New Yorkers Raise a Glass to Toast Mirza Ghalib,
French Wine Especially Blended to Complement Indian Cuisine

(New York, NY – March 1, 2013) More than 100 New Yorkers from the finance, fashion, and wine/beverage industries attended the tasting event for MIRZA GHALIB, the first trio of wines (red, white, and rose) presented by newly-launched company Sufi Wines, on Thursday night at Devi Restaurant. Wine enthusiasts sipped the Cabarnet Sauvignon/Merlot/Syrah blend, as well as the Viognier, both of which are from the Pays D’Oc region of France and are especially blended to complement the richness, complexity, and spicy nature of Indian foods.

The Cabarnet Sauvignon is described as well-balanced with velvety smooth tannins and main aromas of red mature fruits and spices. This varietal best accompanies Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes such as tandooris, tikkas, kebabs, baltis, curries, vindaloos, and biryanis. The Voignier is described as round, velvety, aromatic, and dry, with a final touch of vanilla. This varietal best accompanies Indian fish dishes, as well as vegetarian delicacies such as pakoras, samosas, bhajias, lentils, and curries. Finally, the Syrah contains a fine aromatic expression of fruits and flowers such as black currants, cherries, and violets; it is also best accompanied with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian food.

“Devi was the first restaurant to have faith in our wines and carry them at their restaurant, so it made perfect sense for us to have our launch party here,” says Sam Bhatia, Principal and Founder of Sufi Wines. “Now, we’re in more than 20 Indian restaurants in the tri-state area, and that number is growing organically through word-of-mouth. We want Mirza Ghalib to be the preferred wine for any Indian meal around the world.”

The wine retails at stores for between $14 and $18 a bottle. At restaurants, Mirza Ghalib costs between $40 and $50. To order a bottle or caseonline, visit www.sufiwines.com

(from L to R): Indur & Aroon Shivdasani (Indo-American Arts Council), Joya Dass (CNN, New York One, and AVS Anchor), Sam Bhatia (Principal & Founder of Sufi Wines), and Richard Mei (China Airlines).

(from L to R): Sam Bhatia (Principal & Founder of Sufi Wines), Jaswant Lalwani (Corocoran Real Estate), Judi Kilachand (JINGO Media), and Kunal Lamba (General Manager of Devi Restaurant).

Problems with Carnival Cruise Line Again

PHILIPSBURG, ST. MAARTEN -- Passengers from the Carnival Dream were heading to the airport Thursday instead of sailing home after an on board generator problem halted their trip in the latest maintenance headache for the world's largest cruise line.
The Dream was in St. Maarten on the final stop of a Caribbean cruise when the crew announced they would not be sailing home to Port Canaveral, Florida, because of a mechanical issue with a diesel generator, passengers said.
Carnival Cruise Lines said the Dream had a "technical issue," with its backup emergency diesel generator that was discovered during a test on Wednesday. A company statement said the ship did not lose power but that there were periodic interruptions to elevators and restrooms.
Carnival said all systems were functioning normally Thursday but the company had decided to make flight arrangements for the passengers to return home by air.
Passengers strolling about the Dutch Caribbean town of Philipsburg told The Associated Press that the power and water were out for 10-20 minutes, contradicting media reports of longer outages and unsanitary conditions.
"We have toilets. We have water. It's no different than a regular day at sea," said 31-year-old Tasha Larson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after disembarking with her boyfriend to spend the day in St. Maarten.
Passengers Mary and Terry Washington of Tampa, Florida, said they were grateful because the malfunction gave them an additional day to spend in St. Maarten. ""The plumbing is fine. The food is fine. Everything is fine," Mary Washington said.
Another passenger, Tammie Knapper of Hedgesville, West Virginia, said she also preferred another day in St. Maarten to the risk that the ship could encounter problems as sea. "It's better that we are here than in the middle of the ocean," she said.
The Dream on a seven-day cruise of the Caribbean with 3,646 passengers. The ship's March 16 voyage from Port Canaveral has been canceled.
An engine fire crippled the Carnival Triumph in February, leaving 4,200 stranded for five days without working toilets or power.
